“The picture is his cenotaph, and like the monuments dedicated to the memory of unknown soldiers everywhere, it asks that we look at it, and make one simple acknowledgment: That we have known who the Falling Man is all along.”
Though I can’t really call myself an active user of tumblr, I will be keeping up with my life abroad on my secondary tumblr, anamericaninflorence, a shameless rip off of the Gershwin piece “An American in Paris.” So, for my nine devoted followers, you should consider reading about my life there.
A presto, ciao!

MoMA at the High: A Preview
While the permanent collection at the High Museum of Art remains, to use a technical term, “shitty,” the good people in its special exhibitions department continue to bring some excellent temporary shows. I had the good privilege of touring its operations department and getting a peek at some of the pieces that will be exhibited in its upcoming partnership with MoMA, the first since the successful exchange of Monet’s Water Lilies.
The exhibitions will come in two waves. While I wasn’t familiar with every single painting, represented by a tiny printout in a miniature dollhouse of the museum, many of the selections excited me greatly. I’ve uploaded some of my favorites that will be joining us shortly at the High.
Until then, Dali in August. Excellent.

Piet Mondrain

Marcel Duchamp

Henri Matisse

Jackson Pollock

Umberto Boccinni

Yes, you read that right. A pokemon (or at least, the cultural namesake of a pokemon) brought suit against our ex Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, widely though to be a major league asshole.
Unlike some of the legal jargon that wanders across my desk, this case was fairly interesting as an exploration of creatures as representations of culture and the associated legal implications. In this case, Rumsfeld and his departments actions endangered the native population of Okinawan Dugongs, who figure prominently in Japanese folk lore.
Because of the animals cultural significance, the case invoked Section 402 of the U.S. National Historic Preservation Act, which protects objects (and in this case, creatures) of cultural value, in addition to the commiserate environmental laws.
Art Theft is my new obsession, and what better than to feed my obsession than a blog focusing on the still unsolved Isabella Stewart Gardner theft, the largest in history.
I visited the museum in January, where the curatorial decision was made to keep the frames of the stolen paintings (Vemeer’s ‘The Concert’ and Rembrandt’s only known seascape). The empty frames are pretty sobering.
